HIP-HOP EDUCATION INTERNATIONAL SCAN

Dear Colleague:

With support from the Nathan Cummings Foundation, the Hip-Hop Education Center (HHEC) in collaboration with the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education at New York University, and Institute for Minority and Urban Education at Teachers College is conducting an international census of Hip-Hop-based education courses and programs in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, out-of-school-time programs, institutions of higher learning, and community building/non-government organizations.

In order to understand the wide scope and impression of the Hip-Hop Education field, we use the term Hip-Hop culture because it includes music, dance, spoken word, visual arts, philosophy, science, math, history, entrepreneurship, and spirituality.

The purpose of this survey is to continue where we left off with the Hip-Hop Education National Scan completed in November of 2011. We are counting and documenting the various international educational efforts that are working to engage and respond to the needs of youth in-and-out of the classroom utilizing Hip-Hop-based education.

A key objective is to identify those schools, organizations, and programs which are intentionally serving youth, especially in low- income and chronically violent communities – in order to inform practitioners, policymakers, and funders to better target resources, improve outcomes, and scale and/or replicate best models and practices.

We are writing to request your help maximizing the reach and success of this scan. Beginning with this email we are seeking the participation of known courses, programs, organizations, allies and stakeholders of Hip-Hop-based education around the world until the end of the school year - June 2013 (EXTENDED UNTIL AUGUST 31, 2014). We readily acknowledge the limitations of our scope and resources, which is why we ask you to forward this survey widely.

The survey is very brief and our testing indicates it can be completed within fifteen minutes. If you are aware of others – educators, activists, artists, community leaders, researchers, students, and health and human services professionals – engaged in Hip-Hop work, please encourage them to visit the site and complete the form - http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/internationalhiphop.
