Participant Information Sheet

INVITATION

My name is Kugananda Sri Paranthaman. I am a third year medical student at St. George’s, University of London. You are being invited to take part in a research project investigating the causes and possible solutions to the lack of organ donations among minority ethnic groups in the UK.

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Organ donation is a very serious problem in the UK because the ratio of supply to demand for organs is very low. Over a 1000 people die every year due to the lack of organ donors, particularly among the various minority ethnic groups. In 2012, only 4.62% of people from minority ethnic groups donated their organs. Ironically, the demand for organs from these very groups, make up about 27% of the UK waiting list.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY?

This study is designed to help identify the factors contributing to low organ donations, from various minority ethnic groups in the UK. Furthermore, we would like to assess the level of awareness about organ donation, among various minority ethnic groups in the UK, to help them understand why this campaign to register more organ donors is so important. Finally, we hope to make viable recommendations on how to solve the growing problem of lack of organ donors among various minority ethnic groups in the UK.

DO I HAVE TO TAKE PART?

No, there is no obligation for you to take part. The survey is entirely voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time.

TIME TAKEN TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY

It should only take up to 10 minutes of your time to complete this survey.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS OR BENEFITS?

There are neither risks nor direct benefits to you as a participant. However, we hope that this study would make individuals from minority ethnic groups, such as yourself, realise the importance of organ donation and thus, register as organ donors. We just ask you to answer the questions on the survey as honestly as possible.

WILL CONFIDENTIALITY BE ENSURED?

Yes, complete anonymity is assured. You are not required to write your name anywhere on the questionnaire.

WHO HAS REVIEWED THE STUDY?

This project has been reviewed and approved by Prof P Booton, Academic Lead for medical student projects at St. George’s, University of London. The project has also been reviewed and supported by my tutor, Mr. Abbas Ghazanfar, Consultant Transplant Surgeon at St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust, who can provide further information on the study. By completing and submitting this survey, you are indicating your consent to participate in this study. Your participation is appreciated.
