The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literary reading in American popular culture. The Big Read brings communities together to read, discuss, and celebrate books and writers from American and world literature.

The 2010 BIG READ which featured The Maltese Falcon was a huge success thanks to the joint efforts of the Lamar County Library System, USM College of Arts and Letters and Department of Anthropology/Sociology, The Library of Hattiesburg, Petal and Forrest County, Pine Belt Public Relations Association, The Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association and VisitHattiesburg.
