Terms and conditions to act as a research participant

Dr. Robert Mahan and Timothy Brigham from The University of Georgia are conducting a research study to learn more about how people evaluate and make assessments regarding security and identifying potential threats.

You must be at least 18 years of age to participate. Your participation is entirely voluntary, and you may refuse to participate or discontinue participating at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

Study participation will not be tied to names, email addresses, or other personally identifying information with the exception of students, who will need to provide a name and email address to ensure receipt of course credit for participation.

If you decide to participate in this study, the following will happen:

1. You will be presented with a series of brief narratives describing people, and asked to make judgments regarding the likelihood that you would suspect them of being a potential threat or would wish to investigate this possibility further.

2. You will then be asked to rate the characteristics of the narratives to tell us what aspects you found most or least informative.

3. Students will receive 1.5 RP credits for study completion. Seventy-five single paragraph narratives are involved.

The tasks you will perform are not designed to test your abilities or skills and they cannot provide a measure of the quality of your performance. They are meant only to provide descriptive information of how people perform security and threat assessments.

Participation in this study may include the following risks or discomforts:

1. Some persons may experience headaches or eye strain from reading from a computer monitor. If this applies to you, you may opt out of the study at any time.

You will receive 1.5 RP credit (if applicable) for participating in this experiment.

We hope this research will allow us to better understand how both trained and untrained people make judgments regarding potential threats or security risks. This may eventually lead to a method of evaluating training outcomes in threat assessment, and perhaps eventually refinement in threat assessment techniques.

There are no other direct benefits from these procedures.

Research records will be kept confidential. No individually-identifiable information about you, or provided by you during the research, will be shared with others without your written permission.

You may contact Timothy Brigham at tbrigham@uga.edu if you have further questions. If you have other questions, you may reach Dr. Mahan at (706)542-3056.

Participation in research is entirely voluntary. You may refuse to participate or skip any questions you do not wish to respond to.

STUDENTS: you will be required to Print (or save and print) the final page of the study to verify and receive credit for participation, thus students should be sure they are at a machine capable of this.

By typing “Consent” in the box below, I understand that I am agreeing to take part in this research project.

The researcher can be contacted for any further questions about the research, now or during the course of the project. See contact information for the researcher at the bottom of the page. Additional questions regarding your rights as a research participant or in the event of a research related injury should be addressed to The IRB Chairperson, University of Georgia, 612 Boyd Graduate Studies Research Center, Athens, Georgia 30602-7411; Telephone (706) 542-3199; E-Mail Address: IRB@uga.edu
