During the week of July 13, 2009, the Charlotte Department of Transportation installed rubberized, recycled material sidewalks in two locations: 1201 The Plaza in front of Charlotte Fire Dept. Station #8 and 620 West 28th Street in front of Charlotte Fire Dept. Station #11. Several other locations are planned for installation, but are yet to be determined. The product is a rubberized modular panel which is made of 100% recycled tires.
This is a pilot project and is being implemented in accordance with a City goal to improve the environment. The City of Charlotte is being proactive and testing model best practices by installing these new ‘greener’ sidewalks.
The City’s pilot study allows staff to evaluate the test locations over the next few years to determine if this type of rubber sidewalk is appropriate for greater use.
