1. Virtual Volunteering Study: Introduction
Dear Virtual Volunteer,
Thank you for taking the time to participate in my survey.
This research is being undertaken as part of an Individual Directed Study course offered by the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University in Toronto, Canada.
I am currently investigating the motivational factors that lead young people around the world to become Virtual Volunteers. By "virtual volunteering" I mean unpaid work that is carried out over the Internet for a group or an organization. The research consists of a survey that is open to anyone between the ages of 18-30 who volunteers virtually with an organization in the international youth-led development, environmental or social innovation sector. The survey itself is divided into task-specific questions, as well as general questions that attempt to describe the profile of a typical virtual volunteer (such as motivations for getting involved, common challenges faced, etc.)
By participating in this research, you will help the academic community learn more about who is a virtual volunteer, information which will in turn help give more visibility to your group, and help improve the overall experience of virtual volunteers on-line “agents of change”. The survey is designed in such a way that it does not allow you to skip questions, however, please rest assured that participation is completely voluntary and that you have the right to withdraw from the study at any time. Should you wish to withdraw from the survey, the data will be immediately destroyed by the Survey Monkey system. For those who wish to complete it, there are no potential risks associated with completing the survey, and the aggregation of data ensures that your participation remains completely anonymous and confidential. Answers to this survey will be used for research purposes only and will be presented in my final report due in May 2009.
