Description:
Earning a GED is no longer viewed as an end goal, but rather the opening of a door to postsecondary education and the 21st Century workplace. During this session, the participants will address the following questions.
· What does it take to be career or college ready in the areas of mathematics and writing?
· What can teachers do today to help their students make a successful transition to postsecondary education and the workplace?
· How does this current push for transition readiness align with the existing GED Test and with the plans for the new edition of the test?
This workshop will provide participants with information on:
· Similarities and differences between the GED Test and common college placement tests
· Sample questions from the COMPASS and ACCUPLACER, two commonly used college placement tests
· An overview of the mathematical skills students need to transition from the GED classroom to postsecondary education and the workplace with a focus on algebraic thinking skills
· An overview of the diverse writing skills needed to be successful in postsecondary education and the workplace
· A comparison of GED writing prompts versus college placement writing prompts and writing samples at different levels of competence
· Research-based resource material and activities to use in the classroom
