Sustainable West Hartford Pledge

Climate action starts at home! Please tell us what you'll do (or what you've already done) to move us toward a brighter, greener, cleaner future.

I pledge to make environmentally-responsible choices over the next year to help protect and promote a sustainable future for West Hartford. I’ll help cut down on CO2, save energy – and save money.

I pledge to: “Tighten up” household energy leaks. Caulk windows and doors, insulate the attic, wrap hot water pipes, wrap hot water heater and lower to 120 degrees or less, use a programmable thermostat, turn the thermostat down in winter and up in summer.

Cut back on unnecessary electricity use. Unplug TVs, computers and other appliances or turn them off when not in use. Hang-dry more laundry on drying racks or lines. Buy EnergyStar appliances.

Replace at least 3 light bulbs with CFL bulbs. Install CFLs wherever possible. Dispose of old or broken CFLs safely - in a sealed plastic bag for hazardous waste collection.

Sign up for clean energy. Reduce toxic air emissions, promote energy independence, and help the town earn free solar energy systems in public buildings.

Recycle more. Recycle aluminum cans, glass bottles, #1 and #2 plastic, paper, cardboard & newspapers to reduce landfill and avoid using energy to make new products.

Take shorter showers. Use low-flow shower heads and bathroom fixtures.

Drive smarter & drive less. Plan “errand routes,” walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation to cut traffic congestion, save gas, reduce pollution and improve West Hartford’s air quality.

Shop “green.” Use reusable bags instead of plastic or paper, buy more locally-grown foods that don’t use pesticides, choose more products that have minimal packaging.

Practice green gardening and lawn care. Leave grass clippings on the lawn. Use a mulching mower or rotary mower. Reduce or avoid lawn and garden chemicals that pollute groundwater. Aerate the yard. Reseed in fall to keep weeds at bay.

Plant a tree. Trees absorb CO2, provide shade, muffle sound, keep West Hartford beautiful.

Get active, educate, and vote. Vote for candidates that promote sustainability. Help inform and inspire more citizens & town leaders to make environmentally-responsible choices.
