1. Introduction to Survey

In February 2009 the Council adopted a Cultural Plan for the Lithgow Local Government Area. The Plan identified the need to build cultural industries through economic and tourism development as well as to conduct a feasibility study into the development of a cultural precinct which included the Hoskins Memorial Institute, Union Theatre, Eskbank Station, Eskbank House Museum, the Blast Furnace and Lake Pillans, to name a few places.

In March 2009 the Council was granted funds from Xstrata Coal NSW from their Corporate Social Involvement program to undertake a cultural industries and cultural precinct study.

This survey will inform the study and aims to help Lithgow develop its cultural industries and identify future directions for the cultural precinct.

The term “culture” is used throughout this survey. When used in this survey it is in a broad sense and we are referring to:

- The visual, performing and literary arts
- Social events and activities
- Popular music – performance and recording
- Educational activities leading to the development of cultural skills and knowledge
- Festivals
- Celebrations and commemorative events
- Heritage and history
- Film, cinema, radio and television
- Information technology and new media
- Social values, customs, identity and creativity

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. We value your responses and your interest in our city.

The survey is in two parts. The first part is for every one to complete and asks about your awareness of the various activities that are avaliable and your participation. The second part is to be completed in addition by people who are actively involved in cultural related services. It is separate and additional to the first part.

For your privacy all information will be treated with confidentiality. The first part of the survey is totally anonymous and will be kept seperate to the second part. The second part aims to gather a profile of cultural activites that are currently available to help in creating a cultural map for the city.
