North-Central Austin Candidates Forum Question Suggestions

Six north-central Austin neighborhoods (Allandale, Brentwood, Crestview, Highland, North Shoal Creek, and Wooten) are sponsoring a forum for City Council candidates on Monday, April 13. Our neighborhoods have joined together to address the pressing issues that will impact all of north-central Austin as our city undergoes rapid growth and development.

We need your help to formulate good questions for the candidates. We have divided our neighborhood concerns into possible topic areas, listed below. For each area, enter your suggestions for questions for the candidates. Enter as many or as few (even none) questions as you want in each section.

Survey responses are being collected up through Wednesday, March 11 at 8:00 p.m. Please provide your input before that cut-off time.

*
1. Which neighborhood do you live in?

2. Code Enforcement

City code defines how tall a building can be, how loud a band can play, how late people can stay in the park. Enforcement of City code has often languished and this is a priority for all our neighborhoods.

In the box below, suggest any questions that you would like the candidates to answer on this topic. Enter as many or as few as you like. Leave blank if you have none for this topic.

3. Open Space

The City in 2007 rezoned hundreds of acres of property along
Burnet, Anderson, Lamar and Airport for apartments and condos to be built on top of retail (VMU). There are almost no provisions for plazas, playscapes, outdoor dining, trails, parks, or other outdoor features that will make these new mixed use districts liveable and resilient.

In the box below, suggest any questions that you would like the candidates to answer on this topic. Enter as many or as few as you like. Leave blank if you have none for this topic.

4. Creek-Side Trails and Greenbelts

North-central Austin neighorhoods have pushed for years to get improvements to trails along neighborhood creeks.

In the box below, suggest any questions that you would like the candidates to answer on this topic. Enter as many or as few as you like. Leave blank if you have none for this topic.

5. Neighborhood Planning and Follow-Through

The Brentwood, Crestview, Highland, and Wooten neighborhoods have developed neighborhood plans with the City. The plans list some of the priorities for the neighborhoods. Please contact your local neighborhood association for information on these priorities, and the activity to date on your neighbhood plan.

The Allandale and North Shoal Creeks neighborhoods do not yet have neighborhood plans. They are among the last areas in the city to undergo the planning process. The neighborhood plan will specify some of the land use and development priorities for your neighborhood. In the process, both residential and commercial properties could be rezoned.

In the box below, suggest any questions that you would like the candidates to answer on this topic. Enter as many or as few as you like. Leave blank if you have none for this topic.

6. Land Use and Zoning

Zoning defines what building size and placement are allowed on a piece of land, and determines what kinds of uses (grocery, car dealership, home, park) are permitted. Many properties in our neighborhood have been or are being rezoned.

In the box below, suggest any questions that you would like the candidates to answer on this topic. Enter as many or as few as you like. Leave blank if you have none for this topic.

7. Traffic and Transportation

What transportation solutions will best curb traffic on area streets?

In the box below, suggest any questions that you would like the candidates to answer on this topic. Enter as many or as few as you like. Leave blank if you have none for this topic.

8. Responsiveness

Are City Council members and City staff aware of and responding to our needs?

In the box below, suggest any questions that you would like the candidates to answer on this topic. Enter as many or as few as you like. Leave blank if you have none for this topic.

9. Miscellaneous

Are there any other topics of concern to north-central Austin neighbors?

Are there any additional questions you would like to suggest or comments for us? Let us know. Please remember, however, that the forum will focus on topics of concern specifically for our neighborhood. Other topics (such as downtown development) are important, but other organizations are better suited to pursue them.

10. Contact Information (optional)

If you wish, please leave your contact information in the event we have any questions or want clarification on your ideas. We will NOT give your name out, and you will NOT be added to any contact lists.
