Introduction

Antioch University Seattle’s Center for Creative Change is considering offering an MBA in Social and Environmental Sustainability beginning Fall 2009. Consideration is based on the perceived need by employers in the region for managers who have skills in the area of social and environmental sustainability, in addition to traditional skills associated with an MBA degree.

For purposes of this survey, social responsibility in a business context is defined as a focus on sustaining local economies, vibrant communities, social networks and organizations, cultural awareness, volunteerism and community services. Environmental sustainability is defined as integrating environmental best practices in all areas of the business or organization. It often includes business operations, facilities, product design, supply chain (materials, packaging, shipping), waste streams, employee and customer education and creative marketing.
The new MBA would be offered as part of the interdisciplinary master’s programs at Antioch’s Center for Creative Change, which offers programs that meet once per month and are designed for working professionals. The MBA would feature the hallmarks of an Antioch education: Integration of theory with practice, collaborative learning and systemic thinking that encourages cross-discipline exposure.

This survey is intended to gauge local market need for Antioch to offer a “Green” MBA program. Whether you are an employer or employee of a business or organization, your responses are important for our understanding of the potential market for graduates of an Antioch University MBA program in social and environmental sustainability.
