Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center

1. Webcasts Options for 2009

The Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center is developing plans for webcasts for 2009. Below you will find a list of potential topics focused on water quality related topics. A comparable project focused on air quality issues is developing their web cast plans. The two groups will alternate each month during 2009 between web casts that target water and air quality topics.

We invite your assistance in selecting the 2009 water quality web cast topics.

Would you likely attend a web cast seminar (either a live or archived seminar) on the following possible topics for a webcast:
1. Nutrient Management - Would you likely attend a web cast seminar on:
YesNoNot Sure
What is the nutrient use efficiency of animal agriculture?
Whole farm nutrient management - update on experiences in the dairy and swine industry.
Impact of feed management on nutrient cycles (both atmospheric and terrestrial)
Nitrogen conservation opportunities during treatment, storage, and land application.
2. Land Application of Manure - Would you likely attend a web cast seminar on:
YesNoNot Sure
Winter application of manure – what are the risks and can they be successfully managed?
How far can you transport manure? Factoring rising fertilizer and fuel prices into economics of hauling manure.
Off-farm manure use – what the crop producer and the livestock producer need to know?
Setbacks from surface water. What is the rationale for 35 and 100 foot setbacks and are there alternatives?
3. Treatment, Storage, Handling of Manure - Would you likely attend a web cast seminar on:
YesNoNot Sure
What happens under the covers (lagoon covers)? Impact of covers on nitrogen and odor retention.
On and off-farm feedstocks for anaerobic digestion
Manure to energy – USEPA AgStar decision aid tools
Treatment technologies’ role in managing pathogen risk
Lessons learned from USDA treatment technologies demonstration programs (Farm Pilot Project Coordination and Conservation Innovation Grants programs).
Setbacks from animal housing and manure storage to address air and water risks.
4. Regulations - Would you likely attend a web cast seminar on:
YesNoNot Sure
What is the regulatory inspector looking for? Preparing for an environmental inspection.
Software resources (Purdue's Manure Management Planner) to support CAFO regulation implementation
Construction an NMP with a separate “Strategic” and “Tactical” plan. Will this work under the new CAFO regulations.
5. Emerging/Other Issues - Would you likely attend a web cast seminar on:
YesNoNot Sure
Managing grazing systems to protect water quality?
Understanding the carbon footprint of livestock production and opportunities for reducing carbon emissions.
Climate change – is intensity of storms changing? Will that impact storage design?
Energy use in animal production and tools for auditing energy use.
Opportunities for improving neighbor relations in communities with animal production.
