You are asked to participate in a research study conducted by Laurance Paul Strait, M.A., and Peter Monge, Ph.D., from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California. You were selected as a possible participant in this study because you use the internet to obtain information concerning the 2008 primary campaigns. You must be at least 18 years of age to participate. Your participation is voluntary. Please take as much time as you need to read this information page. You may also decide to discuss it with your family or friends. You also may print a copy of this form.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
We are asking you to take part in a research study because we are trying to learn more about the way people are using the internet to follow the 2008 primary elections and participate politically.
You will be asked to answer a few questions regarding the way you use the internet, your political views, and your opinion about the primary election process. You will also be asked a few non-identifying demographic questions. You may choose to not answer any question, and you may quit answering questions at any time.
POTENTIAL RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS
There are no anticipated risks to your participation. In the event that any question makes you uncomfortable, you may choose not answer it; you are never under any obligation to continue answering questions if you do not want to.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS TO SUBJECTS AND/OR TO SOCIETY
You may not directly benefit from your participation in this research study. However, we hope to learn more about how political campaigns can provide a better experience for you, the potential voter, and so you may benefit indirectly from the results.
PAYMENT/COMPENSATION FOR PARTICIPATION
You will not be paid for participating in this research study.
There will be no information obtained in connection with this study and that can be identified with you. Your name, address or other information that may identify you will not be collected during this research study. Your IP address will not be recorded. Only members of the research team will have access to the data associated with this study. The data will be stored on the password protected server hosting the survey, until it is moved to the researcher’s password protected computer. The data will be stored for three years after the study has been completed and then destroyed.
When the results of the research are published or discussed in conferences, there will be no information that will be included that may reveal your identity since no identifiers are being collected from you.
PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL
You can choose whether to fill out this survey or not. If you volunteer to fill out this survey, you may withdraw at any time without consequences of any kind. You may also refuse to answer any questions you don’t want to answer and still fill out the rest of the survey.
RIGHTS OF RESEARCH SUBJECTS
You may withdraw your consent at any time and discontinue participation without penalty. You are not waiving any legal claims, rights or remedies because of your participation in this research study. If you have any questions about your rights as a study subject or you would like to speak with someone independent of the research team to obtain answers to questions about the research, or in the event the research staff can not be reached, please contact the University Park IRB, Office of the Vice Provost for Research Advancement, Stonier Hall, Room 224a, Los Angeles, CA 90089-1146, (213) 821-5272 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
