1. Pledge your March 2009 Contribution to Water Conservation

As California, Santa Cruz, and Kresge struggle to save its water resources, we are asking that community members pledge to re-evaluate their water usage. In addition, we are asking that they examine the products they purchase (food, cleaners, clothing, household goods) that contaminate or jeopardize ground water reserves and the environment. Kresge community members that pledge a month of conservation will receive a free conservation kit that will include a 4 oz. sample of Kresge Suds, and tips and tools for future water savings.

I pledge to reduce my water consumption by doing the following: Not running water while I brush my teeth (1 - 3 gallons a day)

Not running water while I do dishes (2 - 5 gallons a day)

Not running water while I shave (1 - 3 gallons a day)

Not running water in shower while I soap and lather (1 - 6 gallons a day)

Not flushing unneccesarily; working with my housemates/family to develop a flushing protocol (5 - 20 gallons a day)

Reuse dish and bath water to water plants or other gray water uses. (1 - 5 gallons a day)

Reduce my time in the shower by 20%, use a kitchen timer or alarm clock to make sure that I finish on time. (2 - 8 gallons a day)

Only run full loads in the laundry and dishwashing machines (2 -6 gallons a day)

Use the dryer instead of the washing machine for freshening clothes that don't need full washing (2 - 10 gallons a day)

Report / Fix leaks in toilets and plumbing fixtures. (2 - 10 gallons a day)

Won't let dishes sit in sink and allow food to harden. (1 - 3 gallons a day)

Find a depot.* You can have your hazardous materials picked up through fixit.ucsc.edu. You can drop off old medications, ointments, creams, etc. at the UCSC Health Center.

Use only phosphate-free, dye-free, biodegradable cleaners.

Vinegar, Baking Soda, Calcium Carbonate (Bon Ami), and Castille Soap are all you need for 99% of household cleaning.

Don't use commercial drain or oven cleaners, they are unneccesary, toxic, and usually won't work at Kresge.

Think BEFORE I buy a hazardous chemical or product. There are always alternatives.

Commercial meat manufacturing is one of the largest consumers of water. If you eat meat, eat less, eat local.
