21st Century Classroom Survey for Workshops

The purpose of this survey is to (1) identify your current use of technology for teaching and learning (2) measure growth through a pre/post survey (3) identify the effectiveness of professional development provided by the Instructional Technology Team (4) help design future professional development.

Read each of the scenarios below the topic headings to decide where you currently are in that category. After reading each of the scenarios decide which best fits your use and/or your classroom, then click on the radio button next to that scenario. Be as honest as possible and move quickly, don't over analyze the scenarios.

1. Communication

Communication I have not yet entered the Beginning Level.

Beginning Level: I use technology such as email to communicate professionally.

I am moving toward the Development Level.

Development Level: I use technology to communicate professionally through a variety of tools such as email, blogs, wikis, podcasts, IM and user groups.

I am moving toward Transformative Level.

Transformative Level: My students and I use a variety of technology tools to communicate and learn from others. Through the use of these technology tools, we are contributing members of many different learning communities.

2. Resources and Tools

Resources and Tools I have not yet entered the Beginning Level.

Beginning Level: I tend to use technology tools that I am most comfortable with when choosing to use them in my classroom for teaching and learning. Technology tools and resources are not generally available in my classroom. I take my students to a lab or another room to use technology.

I am moving toward the Development Level.

Development Level: I have some technology tools that are always available for my students in my classroom. The students in my classroom are beginning to select resources and tools that make the most sense for the projects and activities that they are working on. I am developing to get comfortable using tools and resources that I am not that familiar with.

I am moving toward the Transformative Level.

Transformative Level: The use of technology in my classroom is at times planned and at other times spontaneous. I use a wide variety of tools and resources for teaching and learning. Some of the resources and tools are self-selected by students to complete projects as they see fit. Technology is applied appropriately to learning activities. I use a wide variety of resources and tools to meet instructional goals.

3. Teaching and Learning

Teaching and Learning I have not yet entered the Beginning Level.

Beginning Level: The instruction in my classroom is teacher directed, mostly planned and delivered by me.

I am moving toward the Development Level.

Development Level: I am developing to facilitate and guide instruction rather than direct it. I allow for increased levels of student independence in directing their learning.

I am moving toward the Transformative Level.

4. Alignment to Standards and Benchmarks

Alignment to Standards and Benchmarks I have not yet entered the Beginning Level.

Beginning Level: My instruction is purposefully aligned with GVC content standards / benchmarks.

I am moving toward the Development Level.

Development Level: Sometimes my instruction is purposefully aligned with GVC content, technology and 21st century standards / benchmarks.

I am moving toward the Transformative Level.

Transformative Level: My instruction is purposefully aligned with GVC content, technology and 21st century standards / benchmarks.

5. Assessment

Assessment I have not yet entered the Beginning Level.

Beginning Level: I assess students at the end of my lessons and units.

I am moving toward the Development Level.

Development Level: I monitor and adjust the teaching of my lessons and units through the use of formative assessment.

I am moving toward the Transformative Level.

Transformative Level: I use data from summative assessments to inform my planning and teaching of lessons and units. I monitor and adjust the teaching of my lessons and units through the use of formative assessment.

6. Culturally Responsive Teaching

Culturally Responsive Teaching I have not yet entered the Beginning Level.

Beginning Level: I am not sure how to use technology to assist me in creating culturally responsive lessons for my students of color.

I am moving toward the Development Level.

Development Level: Technology assists me in creating culturally responsive lessons for my students of color.

I am moving toward the Transformative Level.

Transformative Level: I reflect and collect evidence of how technology assists me in creating culturally responsive lessons for my students of color. I am intentional about creating engaging lessons using technology with a focus on my students of color.

7. Teacher Collaboration

Teacher Collaboration I have not yet entered the Beginning Level

Beginning Level: Mostly, I work on my own in my own classroom.

I am moving toward the Development Level.

Development Level: I sometimes collaborate with other teachers at my grade level or content area. We collaborate on teaching ideas and sometimes plan units or assessments together.

I am moving toward the Transformative Level.

Transformative Level: I collaborate and share ideas with not only my grade level or content area but also other teachers in and outside of our district. We collaborate and reflect on thoughts and ideas related to our common goals of instruction and assessment.

8. Life-long Learning

Life-long Learning I have not yet entered the Beginning Level.

Beginning Level: I participate in grade/content level meetings (PLC’s) and professional development opportunities offered at my school.

I am moving toward the Development Level.

Development Level: I participate in a variety of professional development opportunities, mostly formal classes. I sometimes explore online resources for answers to my teaching questions.

I am moving toward the Transformative Level.

Transformative Level: I participate in a wide variety of learning opportunities, some in formal classes and some as a member of global online collaborative groups. I exhibit leadership skills in my school.
