TIGER - State Board of Nursing Survey

1. Introduction

Please answer the following survey sent to you by members of the Education Collaborative work-group of the TIGER (Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform) initiative. With President Bush’s directive for the widespread adoption of interoperable electronic health records by 2014, the TIGER initiative is actively pursuing strategies for implementing its vision to: “interweave enabling technologies transparently into nursing practice and education, making information technology the stethoscope for the 21st century”. Beyond determination of pre-licensure recommendations for integration of informatics-related content in curriculum by NLN and AACN, it is important to assess the possible requirements for state-level approval of education programs by state boards of nursing.

There are varying definitions of nursing informatics, but for your reference the ANA (2007) indicates that the informatics specialty "integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice”. Functional areas include computer literacy (communication, data access, education, systems, computer research, project management, simulation, basic desktop software), information literacy (evaluation, system analysis, databases, implementation, design and development, programming, privacy, security, usability/human factors, education, models and theories, nursing classification, taxonomies, nomenclature, system life cycle, change management, systems theory, privacy and security standards, human-computer interaction, computer assisted instruction, statistical analysis, disruptive innovation, means to safety), and professional development (integration of reference terminology, integration of multidisciplinary infrastructure and stands, clinical information system, interdisciplinary design factors, object-oriented modeling, innovation, computerized patient medical records, support of patient safety initiatives) (ANA, 2007).
