1. Introduction

 
CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH

Title of Research:Consumers’ coping with negative emotions after gambling loss

You are asked to participate in a research study conducted by Professor Sunghwan Yi, from the Department of Marketing & Consumer Studies at the University of Guelph.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This study is conducted in order to investigate consumers' coping strategies to deal with different types of negative emotions.

PROCEDURES

If you volunteer to participate in this study, we would ask you to do the following things: (a) Recalling one of the recent gambling occasions in which you lost subtantial amount of money (b) filling out survey items related to the recalled experience.

It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete all the tasks. These tasks will be completed on-line. Findings from this research will be available to you if you contact Professor Yi at syi@uoguelph.ca eight months from today.

POTENTIAL RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS

There is no potential physical risk associated with the procedures used in this study. However, if you feel extremely uncomfortable while recalling a previous emotional experience, you are free to withdraw at any moment.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS AND/OR TO SOCIETY

By participating in this study, you will reflect on your most recent experience of gambling loss, how bad you felt about it, and how you coped with it. In addition, the results of this study will help researchers understand different ways people cope with negative emotions that follow gambling loss.

COMPENSATION FOR PARTICIPATION

If you complete our survey, your name will be entered into a draw. We will select 12 winners when data collection is over, each of whom will receive $100. The chance of winning the draw is one out of 20.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Every effort will be made to ensure confidentiality of any identifying information that is obtained in connection with this study.

Your responses to this survey will be collected and saved separately than your name, ID number or any identifying information you will provide at the conclusion of the study so that your identity will remain anonymous. We will collect your personal information on a separate survey instrument and we will contact you if you are selected one of the winners of the prize.

Please be asssured that your responses will not be released to any person. Your responses will be added to other participants, and only the average tendency will be used to interpret the data. Computer output files will be stored in Professor Yi's office until December 2010, and will be deleted after December 2010.
