Benchmarking for Facilities

1. Facilities Benchmarking Survey

1. The benchmarking process will identify the current cost, consumption and best practice metrics for your facility, and then provide comparisons similar facilities. Based on the comparison, you will be able to identify the best way for you to improve your metrics.

Is benchmarking your facilities something in which you may have interest, depending on its focus, your time required, and costs?

2. On a scale of 1 to 5, please rank each of the following in terms of how important each would be for you to benchmark:

Very ImportantModerately ImportantSomewhat ImportantNot Very ImportantNot Important at All
Utility consumption
Maintenance
Custodial (janitorial)
Security
Operating expenses
Sustainability (reducing your buildings’ carbon footprint)

3. If you could benchmark the buildings in the way that you would want, and at an affordable price point, what is the minimum number of buildings that you would input? (Please answer with a numerical figure only from 1 to 9,999)

4. If you could benchmark the buildings in the way that you would want, and at an affordable price point, what is the maximum number of buildings that you would input? (Please answer with a numerical figure only from 1 - 9,999)

5. For which type of facility are you primarily responsible?

6. If you manage a facility other than offices, identify no more than three metrics that you believe are critical for your type of facility that may not be critical for office facilities:

7. Are you able to obtain totals for the following for the last fiscal year for your building?

 YesNoDon't Know
Annual cost of electricity
Annual cost of water + sewage
Annual cost of natural gas
Annual cost of any other energy
Annual consumption of electricity
Annual cost of water + sewage
Annual cost of natural gas
Annual cost of any other energy
Annual maintenance cost for all corrective and scheduled maintenance
Annual custodial cost
Annual security cost
Area of your building

8. If you could benchmark the metrics you want, and at an affordable price point, how likely would you be to participate in annual benchmarking, where it would take you each of the following amounts of time to input your annual data?

(Keep in mind that the more time it takes, the more detail you can input, and the more benefit you will get from benchmarking.)

Very LikelyModerately LikelySomewhat LikelyModerately UnlikelyVery Unlikely
30-60 minutes (get very basic comparison points)
90-120 minutes (get an “adequate” amount of comparison points)
3-4 hours (get very detailed data in critical areas)
8-10 hours (get very detailed data in all areas)

9. If one assumes that data entry will not be a problem and that the system would yield the types of information you are hoping to obtain (including identifying ways for you to save dollars on each of the areas identified in Question 2), how likely would you be to purchase an annual subscription to such a benchmarking service at each of the following price points?

Very LikelyModerately LikelySomewhat LikelySomewhat UnlikelyVery Unlikely
No Cost
$50 - $100
$200 - $400
$800 - $1,000
$1,500
$2,000
> $2,500

10. How important is it for you that such a benchmarking service is offered through AFE, as opposed to an outside organization (assuming that the database would include buildings from others outside of AFE, to add to your comparables).

11. Please share any questions or additional thoughts about benchmarking – any additional feedback you provide will be helpful. Thank you!
