"Cultural Aspects of Breastfeeding"
Breastfeeding research conducted in distinctly different
cultures will be presented with an emphasis on the affects of cultural
traditions, beliefs and priorities. Cultural norms and values underlie women’s
decision-making about infant feeding. The multi-cultural society in which we
live and work necessitates developing an understanding of the cultures of
others. Sensitivity to differences and similarities is an essential component of
culturally competent care. Suggestions for ways providers and educators might
incorporate knowledge of cultural traditions into facilitating breastfeeding for
all women will be presented.
Please note that paper handouts of the slides will not be provided.
Handouts can be printed in advance from www.azwic.gov
