Readiness for online learning survey

The following questions will help you to determine if you are ready for distance learning. They are divided into several categories.

You will need access to a computer and a good internet connection.
3. My computer connects to the internet via
Dialup access is not a problem, however it may be difficult to download certain large audio/video files. If you are not sure, you should check.
4. My computer has a CD-ROM.
Some programs require you to install software via CD and/or playback audio/video files from a CD.
5. My computer is equipped with speakers.
Hawthorn University makes extensive use of pre-recorded audio lectures and/or teleclasses.
6. My computer runs on
While some earlier versions of operating systems will allow you to access your coursework, most materials are being optimized for these systems.
7. I have a copy of Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.
You will need a word processing program, and the ability to convert files to PDF format.
8. I have a quiet place to work at home.
This is important, since you will want to dial in to our weekly teleclasses on nutrition, and also so that you can do your studies without being disturbed.
9. My family is supportive of my decision to study online.
This is important because you will need to devote several hours a week to your studies - time that you might have been spending on other activities.
10. I am able to adjust my computer settings on my own.
You will need to be able to make some small configuration settings, such as selecting a download folder, and enabling pop-ups for the website.
11. I am able to download and/or install software on my own.
You may need to download the latest FLASH player, or other software and install it.
12. I am able to learn new technical skills.
Since this is the primary means by which we communicate, this is a vital skill. You don't need to be an expert, but you should be comfortable with these basic internet skills.
13. I can use a word processor.
You will be writing papers, so this is a necessary skill to learn.
14. I can copy and paste text and/or images.
This is sometimes needed during the course of your studies.
15. I can print and save files.
Again, a vital skill since you will sometimes want to save a file, or print out instructions for offline use.
16. I enjoy being part of a discussion board or listserv.
We make extensive use of Forums wherein you and your peers and instructors share knowledge.
17. I would enjoy being able to participate in a course according to my own schedule instead of needing to arrive in a classroom at a certain time.
Instead of going to a class at a specific time on a specific day, you should be comfortable in managing your own time so that you can stay on track.
18. I would enjoy not having to commute to participate in a learning experience.
Hawthorn University has no on-site residency requirements, so distance learning means that you can learn where you want, and when you want.
19. I like to learn through dialogue and interaction.
Distance learning is primarily self-directed study enhanced by frequent electronic dialog (via email) and Forum interaction.
20. I am patient with myself when I try something new.
Sometimes new things can be frustrating. In order to grow as a student, it is important to be open to new experiences, and to be able to adapt accordingly.
