Welcome to the MOVING VERTICALLY Research Study

This study is about how people perceive and experience ramps, lifts, elevators, and escalators in public space. Everybody is welcome to participate, however this study is especially interested in the perceptions and experiences of people who have physical disabilities affecting their mobility.   • What is the purpose of this study?

    This research intends to determine how well ramps, lifts, escalators, and elevators:

    1. Provide access.
    2. Affect social interaction.
  • Who is eligible to participate in this study?

    Participants must be:

    1. 18 years of age or older
    2. Residents of the United States
    3. Capable of reading English
  • What will be asked of me as a participant?

    You will be asked to answer some questions about your experiences with ramps, lifts, escalators, and elevators and your perceptions of these experiences.  This survey should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.

  • What are the risks and benefits to me?

    To protect our participants, we have limited the information that we ask you to provide so you cannot be identified. For this reason, the risks associated with participation in this study are minimal. However, it is possible that some of the questions may make you feel uncomfortable. If this occurs, you may skip the question and continue with the survey or discontinue with the survey if you wish by closing your browser. You may contact the Principle Investigator of the study regarding these concerns at movingvertically@gmail.com. The information you provide in the surveys will enable design professionals to create environments that are easier for everyone to use. 

  • Are my answers confidential?

    This study is completely anonymous and your confidentiality will be maintained at all times.

  • What if I don’t want to participate?

    Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. Your refusal to participate will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. You will not be required to answer every question and you can discontinue the survey at any time by simply closing your browser.

  • What are the benefits of this study?

    Your responses in this study will assist designers and researchers generate design solutions that improve the ways people experience and interact with the built environment.

  • Who can I contact about my rights as a participant?

    The Principal Investigator of this project is David M. Schoell. The faculty advisor is G. S. Danford. The Social and Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board at the State University of New York at Buffalo (516 Capen Hall, North Campus, Buffalo, NY 14260) can help you understand your rights as a participant.
