Mill Mountain is the largest, most visited and well-known park in the City of Roanoke. In addition to the Roanoke Star, Zoo, and Discovery Center, Mill Mountain Park is also known for its many acres of rugged woodlands. This combination of a wilderness-like park and easy accessibility has created a popular destination for trail users.
In 2005, the Mill Mountain Land Use Plan was completed that defined Roanoke Parks and Recreation’s vision for Mill Mountain Park as that “through sound stewardship, Mill Mountain will offer environmentally sensitive educational, recreational and civic opportunities while preserving its natural character and resources”. As part of this, the Mill Mountain Trail Plan was also created that outlined a number of recommended improvements. A majority of these recommendations have been completed such as construction of new trails, kiosks, bridges, reroutes, signs and maps. Mill Mountain Park now offers 8.3 miles of single track trails for uses such as hiking, running, bicycling and horseback riding (www.roanokeva.gov/millmountainparkmap).
