SCHOOL SAFETY SURVEY FOR PARENTS

1. PARENT SURVEY

 
We are surveying our school community to determine what parents believe are the issues around student safety. Please take a few moments to complete this survey. The survey will be closed on February 29, 2008 to collate and analyse the data.

DEFINITION OF BULLYING
-persistent and repeated over time
-a deliberate act to harm and intimidate
-a systematic abuse of power in which the victim has difficulty defending him/herself, against one or more individuals
-characterized by unequal levels of affect between victim and bully (ie. the victim is typically upset and in great distress while the bully is usually calm and in control, with lack of compassion for the victim)

EXAMPLES OF BULLYING
PHYSICAL
-hitting, pushing, shoving, slapping, kicking, spitting at or beating others up
VERBAL
-name-calling, hurtful teasing
-insulting, humiliating, or threatening someone
- laughing at an individual in distress
SOCIAL
-excluding others from the group or from an activity
-setting others up to look foolish or make an inappropriate comment
-making sure others don't associate with someone
ELECTRONIC
-sending email or phone text message or pictures to threaten, embarrass, or make one look bad, or spread rumours or reveal secrets about them
GENDER-BASED
-leaving others out or treating them badly because of their gender (either girl or boy)
RACIAL/ETHNOCULTURAL
-treating others differently or badly because of their culture, their racial or ethnic backgroundskin colour or sexual orientation
-saying negative things about someone's race, culture, ethnic background,skin colour or sexual orientation
-telling racist jokes
SEXUAL
-touching, pinching, or grabbing someone in a sexual way
-making crude comments or spreading rumours about someone's sexual behaviour
-making sexual gestures at someone
RELIGION-BASED
-treating others differently or badly because of their religion
-saying negative things about someone's religion
