The University of Maine Cooperative Extension seeks to address the needs of clientele. This year, special programming emphasis for sheep and goat producers will focus on small ruminant nutrition. The following survey is designed to collect information that will help in designing effective programs. It will take about 10 minutes of your time to complete. Please complete the short survey by May 1, 2009. Your participation would be greatly appreciated.

3. Following is a list of skills and knowledge related to small ruminat nutrition. Go through the list and mark each item designating your level of knowledge or skill.

Know the parts of a complete livestock ration (protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water)

Know how to use fencing and paddocks to extend the grazing season
Know how to identify basic grasses and legumes suitable for sheep and goats
Know how to effectively use root crops in the pasture setting
Know how to effectively use browse in the pasture setting
Understand the advantages of targeted grazing
Able to calculate the value of rented/renting pasture
Able to identify signs of predators of sheep and goats
Know how to report predator damage
Able to identify potentially poisonous plants
Know how to effectively treat diarrhea in animals
Able to take a fecal sample from animals for analysis

4. Would you be interested in participating in a special edcuational project coordinated by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in which measurements would be made of any changes in your skill and knowledge level of small ruminant nutrition? Programs would be designed to address identified needs from the above skill & knowledge list. The life of the project would be about one year in length. All data collected would be confidential.
