Door County Veteran Roll Call - 2008

1. Door County Veterans' Roll Call - 2008

This Roll-Call is for all U.S. veterans. It's part of a Homeland Security project to formulate a "Private" sector response to a large scale community crisis.

Terrorist attacks on 9-11-01, Hurricane Katrina, wildfires, floods, earthquakes, and pandemics all underscore our need to mobilize the Private sector when the scope of a community crisis overwhelms or its duration exhausts Public sector first responders.

Relax! Answering this "Roll Call" does NOT commit you to active duty. It does however, position you to know what to do when your community stands in harms way or is forced to house-in-place or mass evacuate. For more reasons to answer this Roll-Call, go to www.DoorCountyVeterans.com, www.RMLearningCenter.com, www.COPs007.com, www.VFWPost8337.com or call Rich Woldt - Commander VFW Post 8337.

1. First, help us update your demographic information. We understand if you do not want to provide email addresses or phone numbers, but know they will primarily be used when locating and alerting veterans during an emergency.

2. In which branch(s) did the veteran serve?

3. In which era(s) did the veteran serve?

4. From which zip code did you or the veteran your reporting on enlist or enter into the military?

5. It's becoming increasing important to have interpreters available during a crisis. Our veteran' emergency response protocols compensate for not having interpretors at the scene, at the EOC, or at staging areas, however we do need to have all potential interpretors logged into our Private Sector Incident Command System. Please check which languages you command at least on a conversational level.

6. Veteran Posts maintain liaisons with Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, Emergency Governments, and Government Officials/Legislators representing the public sector. Check which of the following you'd feel most comfortable acting as Post' liaison during a level 3 crisis. Please explain why such as you are a sworn law enforcement officer, you are a trained fire fighter, you're an emergency government employee, municipal employee, or elected official.

7. The basic "Private Sector Unified Command" has one Incident Commander with(12) direct reports. A Safety Officer makes sure all responding are properly equipped and prepared to proceed. An Information Officer keeps everyone informed while a Liaison Officer coordinates private sector responding assets. There are four Chiefs: The Chief of Operations assembles private sector response and recovery assets in "Staging" areas managed by a "Staging Area Manager." The Staging Area manager focuses on five critical missions each run by a "Unit" commander for Health and Safety, Security, Communications, Transportation, and Recovery. The Chief of Planning prepares operational period plans. The Chief of Logistics handles logistics, while the Chief of Finance documents expenses and figures out how to pay all the bills. Check each of the following positions you feel you'd be most willing and able to fill.

8. Are you a member of a chartered veteran Post or organization? Check each of the following that applies to you? If you belong to a Post that is not in Door County and have a web site, please provide the web address below and a contact number for your Post Commander.

9. During a large scale community crisis that overwhelms our public sector first responders, veterans will be needed to come to the aid of victims and take an active roll in the recovery efforts. Knowing in advance where veterans live and where private sector response and recovery assets are kept will speed both our response and recovery. From which zip code will you or the veteran you represent most likely respond?

10. During a terrorist attack, natural or man-made disaster, pandemic, or large scale community crisis, veterans will be called up to assist with mass evacuations, setting up and securing Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs), shelters, and "private sector" staging areas. Vets will also be needed during search and rescue operations, to extricate victims in harms way, rendering first and possibly long term care, and housing in place. Knowing in advance the skills veterans bring to the scene will save time, reduce casualties, and limit our losses. In which of the following did or does the veteran you represent have experience, training, or industry recognized certifications(ASIS CPP, Certified Fraud Examiners - CFE, Credit Union Risk Management Designation SR-CURM, Commercial Drivers License CDL etc.)?

11. Veterans lookout for veterans! For security reasons it's difficult for vets to learn when fellow vets have been deployed to a war zone. We rely on family members to keep us informed. If you know of a vet currently in a war zone, WITH THEIR PERMISSION, provide us with an email address we might use to keep in touch. Each veteran post has unique veteran' support programs so, unless you request we don't, we will share contact information with commanders from other veteran Posts. Vets can also use www.VFWPost8337.com to stay tuned to local events. Soon they'll be able to listen to Door County ball games from Iraq. Contact our County Veteran Service Officer at http://www.wicvso.org for more information.

12. The Door County Veteran's Memorial Project is only part of an on-going effort to document the history of fallen heros from Door County. If you know of a solder from Door County who was killed in action, help us document their service. Tell us what you know to be true and put us in contact with an appropriate family member who might help verify your information and fill in the blanks.

13. Veterans honor fallen veterans, making sure grave sites are well maintained and flags are properly placed each year on Memorial Day. If you're aware of a veteran grave site that needs our attention, please share that information here. Be sure to give us good directions to the grave site.

14. Is there any special memory you'd like to share? If so, either type it below, or send it as a word document to Rich@RichWoldt.com. Please don't hesitate attaching digital pictures we can place in our on-line photo album at www.VFWPost8337.com.
