1. Welcome to the High School Law Institute Application
** Please note that you must fill out pages in consecutive order. This application will not let you skip ahead. **
10th and 11th grade public high school students, welcome to the High School Law Institute (HSLI) sponsored by NYU School of Law and Columbia Law School!
HSLI, which is run and taught by NYU and Columbia law students, is designed to introduce New York City area high school students to the basics of American law and introduce students to many law-related careers. The weekly program will run on Saturdays from October 2008 through April 2009. Students will come to one of the law schools each Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and participate in three hands-on classes: criminal law, constitutional law, and a mock trial course to prepare for a competition at the end of the year. Additionally, we will host a “College Day” designed to answer students’ and parents’ questions about selecting/applying to college.
This is a great opportunity for you to find out more about the American legal system that affects our daily lives, build their resumes for college, and explore whether a career in law is something that interests them. Participants will have the chance to meet and work with NYU and Columbia law students who will be teaching the program, can answer questions about college preparation, and may be able to write a college recommendation letter.
We want the most diverse student population possible for our program. There is no fee for attending the program. You need not have previous law-related classes or experience. You don’t even have to want to be a lawyer. We are only looking for interest in participating in our program! All you need to succeed in this program is a desire to learn more about our legal system regardless of grades, other experiences, or career goals. We simply ask that you be committed to attending and participating in the program on a weekly basis.
Please complete the attached application. The application must be received by 5pm on Friday, September 19, 2008.
Please feel free to contact nyu.hsli@gmail.com if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you!
