Participation of Part-Time Faculty

The purpose of the attached survey is to obtain a local academic senate perspective on the status of part-time faculty participation in the academic and professional life of your college. We are requesting both your personal viewpoint as academic senate president, and general data that is already available to you, augmented by conversations with faculty colleagues such as past senate presidents, union president, department/division chairs and part-time senators. We have also provided opportunities for narrative comments. Questions relate to issues originally raised in the Spring 2002 paper, Part-Time Faculty: A Principled Perspective, and to more recent concerns contained in a variety of external, state-level reports, rejected system budget requests relating to part-time faculty issues, and implementation considerations for the Basic Skills Initiative. We hope to repeat the survey in the relatively near future in order to monitor any changes in the involvement of part-time faculty in the life of the colleges. It is not our intent to survey part-time faculty directly at this time.

Thank you for your help.
