. At the workshop we discussed the difficulties of obtaining data for projects and studies when they are dispersed in different web sites and formats. Some efforts have been made to integrate, but the problem has still not been overcome. The CUAHSI Hydrologic Information System project is working with the Federal agencies to create web services that will allow researchers to easily get data from any Federal database through a single request from their tool of choice (e.g., Excel, Matlab, ArcGIS, etc.). These same technologies could be implemented with local and state databases to create a single "digital watershed" for Chicago that enables any user to see all available information on an interactive map and download all data in a single query to their desktop. How interested would you be in having such an effort done?

. The AISIS initiative that sponsored this workshop has funding from the UIUC Campus and NCSA to perform testbedding research on the role that sensing and information systems could play in Chicago water management (a post-doc and 5 graduate research assistants, to be awarded via a white paper competition). The workshop participants proposed an initial focus on managing stormwater in the Chicago region, including (1) operations, water levels, and water quality of TARP and its receiving waterways; and (2) managing water for wetlands and wildlife (e.g. building on Calumet wetlands study to optimize habitat for different species at different times of year or optimizing to remove nutrients or heat). Do you have comments on or other suggestions for this initial focus?
