1. NYU Tunnel of Oppression

Tunnel of Oppression Description:

The Tunnel of Oppression is a series of museum-like rooms that are meant to take participants out of their comfort zone and confront realistic issues surrounding racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, classism, religious oppressions, and global oppressions. Participants are lead through a series of rooms where they are asked to experience various forms of oppression. They are asked to consider how oppressions and privileges intersect in society to have an impact on the participants, as well as the individuals in their group.

The Tunnel of Oppression at NYU:

This is the first-year The Tunnel of Oppression will be initiated at NYU. The Tunnel is an effort initiated by the Department of Residential Education.

NYU’s inaugural Tunnel of Oppression will take place on the following dates/times in the Third North Residence Hall located at 75 Third Avenue (Third Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets):
Tuesday, January 17 from 6-9pm (Pre-Registered Groups Only)
Wednesday, January 18 from 6-9pm (Pre-Registered Groups Only)
Thursday, January 19 from 6-9pm (individual walk-ins)

If you are a residential student, please see your RA to sign up to go through The Tunnel. Commuter students can contact their CA or attend the open session on Thursday, January 19 from 6-9pm. Members of the University community can register a group or go through The Tunnel during the open sessions indicated on the schedule.

Each participant will go through The Tunnel in a group. Given the variety of emotions The Tunnel experience can elicit, participants will be provided with an outlet for processing the activity, which will be lead by faculty and staff members. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to learn about ways they can become involved in their communities to actively address the scenes that they have seen portrayed.
