1. Introduction

Hi,

My name is Rafia Hamid and I am a senior doctoral student at the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies of Adelphi University in New York. As part of my dissertation, I am conducting research on acculturation variables of South Asian college students, born or raised in the United States. I would like to invite you to participate in this research project by answering a few questionnaires, In order to participate, you must be a South Asian having been born in the United States or immigrated to this country at a later age. In addition, both of your parents must also be of South Asian origin, raised in one of the countries in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal) and both of them must be immigrants to this country. Also, you must be a college student between the ages of 18 – 24.

The information gathered through this study will add to the growing knowledge about important factors that relate to cultural experiences and orientation of South Asian students who’ve been raised in the United States. This, in turn, will facilitate a better understanding of the social, familial and individual issues and concerns of the young South Asian population in the US. The time required for completion of the questionnaires should be approximately 30 minutes.
Your participation in this study will be kept anonymous and confidential. You will be assigned a numerical code number and your identifying information will be kept separate and confidential from the rest of the questionnaires. No identifying information such as name, age, or religion will be revealed or shared with any individual in conjunction with your responses.

Your participation in this research is voluntary. You are free to refuse to answer any questions and stop your participation in this study at any time. If you have any questions or concerns about this study, please feel free to email me at Rafiamh@aol.com.

This research has been reviewed and approved by the Adelphi University Institutional Review Board. If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please contact Dr. Patrick Ross or Dr. Robert Otto, Co-Chairs of the Adelphi University IRB, at 516-877-4806 (ross@adelphi.edu) or 516-877-4276 (otto@adelphi.edu) respectively.

Thank you for your help with this project.

Sincerely,

Rafia Hamid, M.A.
