Parents' Choice of Alternate Educational Experiences
1. Project Summary and Consent
You have been invited to take part in a research study to understand parents’ beliefs on school absence and alternate schooling methods. This study will be conducted by Lisa Horton, Department of Teacher and Learning, Steinhardt School of Education, New York University, as part of her Undergraduate Honors Project. Her faculty sponsor is Professor Diana Turk, Department of Teaching and Learning, Steinhardt School of Education, New York University.
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete a survey about your reasons for permitting your child to be absent from school. Participation in this study will take approximately fifteen minutes. If you express interest in an in-person interview and are selected to participate, it will take approximately an additional hour.
There are no known risks associated with your participation in this research beyond those of everyday life. Any participant that becomes upset by the content of the survey should contact the University Counseling Service at (212) 998-4780 or the Wellness Exchange at (212) 443-9999. Although you will receive no direct benefits, this research may help the investigator understand why an increasing number of students are being pulled from school.
Confidentiality of your research records will be strictly maintained by electronically submitting forms with no identifiers so that subjects are anonymous.
Participation in this study is voluntary. You may refuse to participate or withdraw at anytime without penalty. For interviews, questionnaires, or surveys, you have the right to skip or not answer any questions you prefer not to answer. You must be a parent/guardian and at least 18 years of age to participate in this survey.
If there is anything about the study or your participation that is unclear or that you do not understand, if you have questions or wish to report a research-related problem, you may contact Lisa Horton at (708) 516-9435, firstname.lastname@example.org, or the faculty sponsor, Dr. Diana Turk at (212) 998-5492, email@example.com, 239 Greene Street, Room 635, New York, NY 10003.
