Introduction

This study is being conducted as collaboration between the University of Lincoln, UK and the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Kosice, Slovakia.

This questionnaire is designed to improve our understanding of the dog’s behaviour in the owner’s absence. Destructiveness, vocalisation and house soiling are among the most common complaints of dog owners, frequently resulting in the breakdown of the human-animal bond and, in some cases, even leading to surrender and abandonment. By taking the time to fill out this questionnaire you will be helping to improve our knowledge on this important subject which may help us develop more effective treatments.

Please complete this questionnaire if your dog shows ANY of the following when separated from the owner or left alone:

  • Depression / sadness
  • Destructiveness
  • Vocalisation: whining, barking or howling
  • House soiling

Please DO NOT complete this survey if:

  • You have owned your dog for less than 1 month
  • Your dog is under 12 Weeks
  • There has been a significant change in the household in the last month (e.g. family member left home, moved house etc)
  • Your dog previously showed any of these signs and no longer does so

Please complete this questionnaire with a particular dog in mind and please complete only one survey per household, even if more than one dog shows the signs.

The survey should take no longer than 20 to 25 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous.

Thank you for taking the time to participate in this survey.

*Note: Where the questionnaire says “You”, we mean the individual to whom your dog seems most attached.
