PVMA Veterinary Prescriptions & Medications Survey |
1. Veterinary Prescriptions and Retail Pharmacies: We Need Your Help!
Dear Colleagues:
Thank you for completing this brief survey to help the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) better understand what is going on in practice in relation to prescription errors.
According to an article which appeared in JAVMA on September 1, 2014, ten percent of veterinarians responding to recent polls said they have had patients harmed when outside pharmacies made substitutions in filling prescriptions. Surveys conducted by five veterinary medical associations together indicate about one-third of respondents knew of occasions when pharmacies dispensed drugs to clients that were different in dosage, and they did so without consulting the prescribing veterinarian. Most of those changes occurred without any known harm.
PVMA is collaborating with the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association to educate both communities how to effectively work together. Among the issues being discussed for potential collaboration is the issue of prescription filling errors.
Our first step is determining what veterinary practices in Pennsylvania are experiencing. We greatly appreciate you taking several minutes to answer these 8 questions to help us take the pulse on what is happening in our Commonwealth.
Sincerely yours,
Charlene Wandzilak
Executive Director
