* 3. Montclair Animal Control and Humane Montclair believe that the current chicken ordinance needs to be updated to allow more humane options for chickens. We believe that chickens should be allowed to have a run where they can walk around, scratch the ground, take dust baths and exhibit natural behavior.

* 4. As a chicken owner, I understand that not all Montclair residents may have the same affection for chickens as I may have. I understand that location restrictions have been put in place to ensure the safety and happiness of both chicken owners and their neighbors and I understand that maintaining a minimum distance between my chicken coop and my neighbors ensures that is possible.

The revisions being suggested to the current ordinance do not include modifying these minimum distance requirements, they will remain as is.

Montclair Animal Control and Humane Montclair believe that the current chicken ordinance should indicate the minimum acceptable size ratio for chicken coops.  We are suggesting chicken coops have a minimum footprint area of three (3) square feet per chicken. Specifying a minimum indoor space per chicken prevents overcrowding, which helps prevent disease and infighting, ensuring the health of the chickens.
