Title: Perspectives on Rural Airway Management


Webinar Description:  Dr. Fales will review important concepts of basic and advanced airway man agreement with particular emphasis on unique challenges facing rural EMS personnel.  The webinar will include opportunities for Q and A and will address controversial areas including suporaglottic airways for MFRs and rapid sequence intubation for paramedics.


Objectives: At the end of this session the participant shall be able to:

1.Describe the difference between oxygenation and ventilation.
2.List at least 3 challenges in airway management that are unique to rural EMS operations
3.List at least five strategies to optimize basic airway management, oxygenation, and ventilation.
4.Identify advantages and disadvantages of supraglottic airways compared to other basic and advanced airway management techniques.
5.Describe the importance of and strategies for airway skill maintenance for rural EMS personnel of all levels.


About Dr. Fales:
William Fales, MD has been involved in EMS in some capacity for over 40 years.  Starting as a volunteer firefighter and EMT in rural Pennsylvania, Dr. Fales has provided EMS through ground and air EMS agencies serving rural, suburban, and urban communities as an EMT and paramedic.  A graduate of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Dr. Fales completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, recognized as the largest rural medical center in the country.  During residency Dr. Fales served a s a flight physician covering a large rural area of north central and northeastern Pennsylvania.  Since 1993, Dr. Fales has served as the EMS Medical Director for Kalamazoo County.  In 2015, he was appointed to the newly created position of State Medical Director for the Michigan Bureau of EMS, Trauma, and Preparedness.  Dr. Fales is the Chief of the Division of EMS and Disaster Medicine of Western Michigan University Homer Stryker, MD School of Medicine.  As a local medical director, Dr. Fales continues to regularly respond to EMS incidents in the field.

At least two days prior to the program, you will be provided via e-mail the teleconference call number and information on how to log onto the webinar via Zoom. The PowerPoint presentation will be available to be printed from our website about two days prior to the program.

After the program, those that attended the full program, monitored by roll call will be emailed an attendance sheet as well as a quiz and an evaluation via Survey Monkey. This information is required for receiving a certificate which will include your one credit of continuing education
