1. Basic Information

The NCALL National Abuse in Later Life Resource Directory is used by older victims, professionals, and others throughout the United States to locate resources and direct services that are specifically tailored to meet the needs of victims of abuse in later life. For this directory, abuse in later life can include male and female victims, age 50 and older, who are victims of domestic or sexual abuse. Domestic abuse in later life is not limited to intimate partner violence, but is defined as abuse perpetrated by someone with whom the victim has a relationship in which there is an expectation of trust. It could be a family member, friend, caregiver, or other trusted individual.

The NCALL National Abuse in Later Life Resource Directory lists direct service programs with specialized services and housing for older victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and selected national and state organizations. National organizations that focus on domestic and sexual violence, elder abuse and aging issues, and other agencies that may provide useful information for the abuse in later life field can be found in the National Organization section. The State Section lists tribal and state domestic and sexual violence coalitions who have created specialized projects that focus on abuse in later life. The NCALL National Abuse in Later Life Resource Directory is funded by the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW)
Guidelines for Specialized Services and Housing

Generally, domestic violence and sexual assault programs provide services to victims of all ages, but may not have created specialized services for victims of abuse in later life. Many adult protective services agencies and aging network organizations provide programs for elder abuse victims, but may not provide services designed specifically for victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. These programs provide valuable services and help many older victims; however, the purpose of the NCALL National Abuse in Later Life directory is to narrowly focus on agencies that have created specialized services designed specifically for older victims of domestic and sexual abuse in later life. Some examples of specialized services currently listed:

  • Domestic or sexual violence service organizations with an elder specialist
  • Domestic and sexual violence organizations that are doing specialized outreach to older persons
  • Organizations that have started support groups for victims of abuse in later life
  • Organizations that provide specialized housing for victims of abuse in later life such as elder shelters and transitional housing programs
  • APS, aging network, or elder abuse agencies that have started specialized programming, outreach, or materials for domestic violence and/or sexual assault in later life victims
