The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has committed to developing a new long‑term strategy for the built environment professions, trades and occupations (the ‘Professions Strategy’), to be published in Spring 2027. This aims to support a skilled, motivated, responsible and productive workforce across the built environment, which is equipped and enabled to deliver safe, high-performing and sustainable buildings.
To inform the strategy, MHCLG is seeking evidence about the people and organisations who work in the built environment and the overall system within which they operate: who does what, how work is undertaken and how skills, knowledge, behaviours and accountability practically support safety, quality, sustainability, resilience, growth and productivity.
It is likely that this call for evidence will also inform MHCLG thinking around questions of professional regulation and protection of function, although it is designed as an information gathering exercise and does not present new policy proposals for consultation at this stage.
CIAT is therefore inviting members and affiliates to complete this survey, to help us build a robust quantitative evidence base to inform our response.
We will also be running a series of short workshops to develop qualitative evidence to complement this. For more information on the workshops, or if you have any questions about CIAT's work in this area, please visit https://architecturaltechnology.com/ciat-call-for-evidence-strategy-for-professions.html or email externalaffairs@ciat.global.
Survey responses are anonymous.
We estimate that the survey will take around 30 minutes to complete, if you answer every question, but most questions are optional and partial responses will still be valuable.
The survey will be open until 20 July.
