In our current Land Use Bylaw, accessory buildings are a permitted use in the Small Lot Country Residential, Lake Resort and Hamlet Residential Districts.  They are limited to two accessory buildings per property. The total combined area of accessory buildings shall not exceed 12% of the total lot area.

An accessory building is defined as a building separate and subordinate to the main building, the use  of which is incidental to the main building, and is located on the same lot. This includes fabric covered buildings, and ground-mounted  solar energy systems with a surface area under 10 sq. m. (33 sq. ft.).

An accessory building requires a development permit if it is larger than 107 sq. ft. (33 sq. m.) in size. The accessory building shall not exceed one storey, nor 5 m (16 ft) in height, other than at the discretion of the development authority to a maximum of 6 m (20 ft).

Some examples of accessory buildings are: sheds, garages, fabric buildings, solar array systems, shops, greenhouses, etc. Shipping containers are also classed as an accessory building but are only allowed in the Small Lot Country Residential District.
