Introduction

When you work with young children, you are their inspiration. Let us inspire you.

Starcatchers is delighted to be working with the Scottish Government and City of Edinburgh Council to deliver our innovative Creative Skills training programme in 2019/20, with a special focus on how the expressive arts help to support literary skills.

Creative Skills is Starcatchers’ unique artist-facilitated training programme. We give early years practitioners, educators and others who work with babies and young children the confidence and skills to put expressive arts at the heart of practice.

Our artists will challenge you to explore your own creativity and demonstrate how expressive arts such as music, drama, visual art and creative movement can give a voice to, and develop a sense of agency in, the children you work with. Our artists will work alongside the Early Years team in Edinburgh to explore how these fun, practical arts experiences can be used to support and develop literary skills.

With energy, colour and fun we build capacity by focusing on:
  • Your own creative confidence - everyone is creative; everyone is an artist. You can inspire, create wonder and introduce new ideas without leading or dominating the creative process.
  • Theory - why creativity is central to every child's healthy development and how the expressive arts are a vehicle for nurturing and developing this innate capacity to help every child reach their full potential
  • Practice - how to put expressive arts at the heart of your day-to-day practice and create inspirational learning opportunities for babies and children
Participant Feedback from 2014-18:

"It’s been really magical…it’s lifted me and reminded me what our jobs are really about."

"This needs to roll out to everyone who works with children."
