Welcome! Please take a moment to read over this description of the survey you are about to take. When you are ready to proceed, click "Continue."

You are being asked to participate in a survey on altruism and generosity. You are eligible to participate in this study if you are at least 18 years of age. There are no right or wrong answers and all responses are anonymous and will be treated confidentially so please be candid. The survey itself is divided into these parts:

Part 1 Directions

Part 2 Background: Please tell us just a little about yourself, so we have a feel for who is participating in the survey.

Part 3 Concepts: Please tell us your thoughts about what constitutes altruism and generosity.

Part 4 Causes: What do you think motivates altruism and generosity? Parts 2,3, and 4 of the survey are very short and can be completed in roughly 5 minutes.

Part 5 Open-ended (Optional): More open-ended questions define what you think causes your acts of altruism and generosity. We encourage you to take as much time as you like on these open-ended questions. If you find any question too long to answer, please just skip it and continue with other questions.

Participation in this study is voluntary. There is no cost to you for participating, nor is there any payment. You may refuse to participate or discontinue your involvement at any time without penalty. You may skip any question that you do not wish to answer. Short answers or phrases are certainly acceptable and even if you do not have the time to complete this survey, we hope you will return what ever you have completed. The survey results will be stored on a secure server and you should not put your name or any identifying personal information on the questionnaire.

We know how precious your time is so thank you very much for taking the time to complete this survey. This survey is what is called a snowball survey so we are asking each participant who is willing to do so to invite several friends to also take the survey. In this way, we hope to gain a larger number of surveys to analyze. You should not feel obliged to do this unless you are so inclined.

The Institutional Review Board procedures in the US require us to note that there are no direct benefits to you from taking this survey; nor are there any costs, except for your time. However, this study may teach us all more about the way people think about both altruism and generosity. If you would like the results from the survey, you have access to them at www.ethicscenter.uci.edu and by contacting the lead researcher. This information will not be shared with anyone except the Lead Researcher.
