Thank you for taking the time to fill out this survey as part of the Normalising Eating study. This will help me in completing a thesis as part of obtaining a Masters degree in Human Nutrition at Massey University.
Once you have read the information below, please feel free to continue onto the survey by clicking Next at the bottom of the page.
IMPORTANT: You will need access to YouTube to complete this survey. If your organisation's computer system does not allow YouTube access, you will need to complete the survey from home.
You can skip any question. If you skip a question, please go ahead and answer as many questions as you can right until the end. This ensures that some of the data you provide can still be used.
WHAT IS THE STUDY ABOUT?
Eating disorders are becoming increasingly recognized as a serious illness in New Zealand. Lifetime prevalence of all eating disorders in New Zealand is 1.7%, rising to 2.9% for females (RANZCP, 2006). Normalizing eating behavior is one of the primary goals for recovery from eating disorders. However, there is no consensus or working definition of what "normal eating" is and only limited research as to what actually encompasses normalised eating.
I would like to get people’s opinions on what is considered normalised eating. I am hoping that this research will help eating disorder clinicians and patients set relevant and helpful eating goals when working towards recovery.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
I am inviting various groups of people to participate in this research study:
• Clinicians, including dietitians, in New Zealand and Australia with over one year experience working in the field of eating disorders and still working in the field
• People who have recovered from an eating disorder
• Women aged 18-60, who are not dietitians currently not working in the field of eating disorders or clinicians with previous (not current) eating disorder experience
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
As a participant, you will fill out a series of online surveys. You may complete them in any internet accessible location you choose. In total, they should take you no more than ninety minutes to complete.
A small number of people who have filled out the survey will be asked to visit a facility in Auckland for a focus group of 5-10 people. The location, date and time will be decided based on the potential participant’s availability. The group will meet once for about two hours to discuss the research topic in a little more depth. If you are a dietitian working in the field of eating disorders, you may join the focus group via Skype.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Your responses to the survey are completely confidential. No individual will be identified by their responses. The emphasis in this study is on patterns, not individuals. Comments provided in the survey will be grouped into themes and the themes summarised in the final report. Completion of the survey is voluntary, and you have the right to decline to answer any particular question, by simply moving to the next question. By completing the survey, you are also implying consent for the information you provide to be used as data in the research project and any publications that may arise.
COMPENSATION
Upon completion of the online survey, all participants will be entered into a prize drawing of $100 value. All focus group participants will receive a $10 petrol voucher. You will also be given the option to receive a summary of the project findings.
