Knowledge Organization for Biodiversity Research

1. Introduction

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF, http://gbif.org) has commissioned a report to advise it on future directions for the development and deployment of Knowledge Organization Systems, KOS, in the service of biodiversity research. "KOS" encompasses various semantic approaches to labeling and interpreting digital data-- using controlled vocabularies, metadata specifications, gazetteers, thesauri, and ontologies, etc., along with standards-based tools, to provide advanced technology services that are compatible with the Semantic Web. In the area of biodiversity informatics, these approaches might provide powerful and efficient ways of representing and exchanging biological taxonomies and other types of biodiversity-relevant information over the Internet.

As part of reporting to GBIF about semantic technologies, we hope to survey the expertise, resources, and activities in KOS already present within the biodiversity science community, and identify where synergies and gaps exist among these. Your participation in this survey, which should take no longer than 10 minutes, will greatly assist in informing GBIF about future directions for developing semantic solutions for accessing biodiversity data. Thank you!

To prevent spamming, only one response per IP address is permitted. If you need to make two responses, please do so from another computer using the same email address, and include a brief explanatory note at the end to alert us to contact you.
The first few questions ask you to assess your own level awareness of various knowledge organization concepts and tools, and set the context for your answers by describing your professional activity. In subsequent questions, we will ask you to describe your organization's knowledge organization resources and gaps, and to characterize its impediments to adopting knowledge organization technologies.

1. What are your primary areas of thematic interest related to the biodiversity sciences?

2. Please select your primary areas of expertise and interest. You can choose more than one category.

3. Please assess your level of awareness with the following categories of KOS concepts:

Completely unfamiliar with any examplesVaguely familiar with one or more examplesFamiliar with one or more examplesVery familiar with one or more examples
Controlled Vocabularies
Ontologies
Thesauri
Gazetteers
Concept Maps
Linked Data

4. How familiar are you with these KOS tools:

Completely unfamiliarVaguely familiar with one or moreFamiliar with one or moreVery familiar with one or more
Ontology editors
Ontology visualizers
Reasoners
Data mining tools
In the remaining questions, we seek information about the kind of organization you serve, your role in it, its current knowledge organization activities, and its plans and needs for future such activities.

5. Aside from yours, what other roles are represented in your organization? One individual may hold several roles.

6. What are the main functionalities you or your group/project hope to attain from using semantic (KOS) solutions?

7. What KOS activities presently are undertaken by your organization. There may be more than one.

8. What standards are you and your organization currently considering or using for semantic solutions?

9. What are the impediments to adoption of KOS tools in your organization? Choose as many as apply.

10. Please rank these attributes of knowledge organization technologies in the order you think your organization will regard them. 1 is highest. You may assign the same rank, or no rank, to several attributes.

11. Please add any additional comments you have. If you wish, these could include the name of your organization, the URLs of any semantically-based biodiversity information projects it currently has underway, or areas not touched upon that you think GBIF should consider.

12. May we contact you for followup or clarification of your answers? If yes, please provide an email address below.

Thank you for taking the time to answer this survey.
