Knowledge Organization for Biodiversity Research
1. Introduction
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF, http://gbif.org) has commissioned a report to advise it on future directions for the development and deployment of Knowledge Organization Systems, KOS, in the service of biodiversity research. "KOS" encompasses various semantic approaches to labeling and interpreting digital data-- using controlled vocabularies, metadata specifications, gazetteers, thesauri, and ontologies, etc., along with standards-based tools, to provide advanced technology services that are compatible with the Semantic Web. In the area of biodiversity informatics, these approaches might provide powerful and efficient ways of representing and exchanging biological taxonomies and other types of biodiversity-relevant information over the Internet.
As part of reporting to GBIF about semantic technologies, we hope to survey the expertise, resources, and activities in KOS already present within the biodiversity science community, and identify where synergies and gaps exist among these. Your participation in this survey, which should take no longer than 10 minutes, will greatly assist in informing GBIF about future directions for developing semantic solutions for accessing biodiversity data. Thank you!
To prevent spamming, only one response per IP address is permitted. If you need to make two responses, please do so from another computer using the same email address, and include a brief explanatory note at the end to alert us to contact you.
The first few questions ask you to assess your own level awareness of various knowledge organization concepts and tools, and set the context for your answers by describing your professional activity. In subsequent questions, we will ask you to describe your organization's knowledge organization resources and gaps, and to characterize its impediments to adopting knowledge organization technologies.
