NOTE: For Children/Minors (persons under 18 years of age) participating in this study, the term You addresses both the participant ("you") and the parent or legally authorized representative ("your child").
You are invited to participate in a research study entitled “Physical Activity and Pilipino American Youth Assessment.” The purpose of this research is to understand perceptions of physical health (e.g., physical activity, nutrition, diet) and mental health (e.g., stress, coping skills, self-esteem) with Pilipino American youth. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to participate in an individual interview or a focus group with 5-7 other individuals. Participation should take about 60-90 minutes and will be completed after one day.
The foreseeable risks of participation in this study are minimal. In order to minimize these risks, a counseling psychologist will be available for a debriefing immediately after completing the focus group. Also, a resource packet consisting of contact information for this study, a list of relevant books, articles, and films, and a referral sheet of local counselors and counseling centers will be provided if requested. The possible benefits to you are participating in a conversation where you will be allowed to share your experiences with others. The potential benefits to society are gaining a better understanding of Filipino American experiences in order to lead to positive changes no individual and institutional levels.
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. You have a right to refuse to participate without consequences. If you decide not to participate your decision will not affect your relationship with John Jay College or anyone affiliated with this project.
If you decide to participate you may discontinue participation at any time. You may refuse to answer any specific questions or refuse to engage in any task at any time during the study. Withdrawal or refusing to answer specific questions or engage in specific tasks will not result in any consequences to you and will not affect your relationship with John Jay College or anyone affiliated with this project.
All information will be completely confidential. Information gathered from you will be kept in a locked drawer in the principal investigator’s office at John Jay College. Audiotapes will be used to record these focus group sessions and will be destroyed after transcription.
