Project Title: Sociologists and Retirement

Principal Investigator: Susan Prager, Retired

Introduction/Purpose: You are invited to participate in a research study. The study is conducted under the direction of Prof Susan Prager, Retired, Dept of Sociology, Brooklyn College. The purpose of this study is to understand more about how retired sociologists and those contemplating retirement plan for their future, what they are doing / hope to do doing and how they found these activities. The results of this study may help the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) determine what services, if any, are needed by these two groups.

Procedures: Approximately 200 individuals are expected to participate in this study. Each subject will respond to an online questionnaire. The time commitment of each participant is expected to be 20 minutes once

Possible Discomforts and Risks: Your participation in this study may involve nothing more than momentary discomfort. If you are bothered, as a result of this study you should call the AARP 888-687-2277

Benefits: Participating may increase your knowledge of your attitudes towards retirement and may give those contemplating retirement ideas about possible activities. In addition, participation will help the ESS determine what services, if any, retired members/those contemplating retirement might want/need. The findings will be discussed at the annual meeting of the ESS February 23-26, 2012 in New York City. Our session is scheduled for Sunday February 26th at 12:00 P.M. This will give participants a chance to learn how their colleagues are handling this issue. I hope you will be able to attend. If you wish a copy of the findings, feel free to contact me at the number/email below.

Voluntary Participation: Your participation in this study is voluntary, and you may decide not to participate without prejudice.

Confidentiality: The data obtained from you will be collected via responses to an on line questionnaire on Survey Monkey. The collected data will be accessible to Professor Prager, the PI and Professor Philip Napoli, Chairperson of the Brooklyn College IRB. The researcher will protect your confidentiality by not asking for your name and not using any identifying demographic data in discussing individual responses. The collected data will be stored on line. Only the above will have access to the file.

Contact Questions/Persons: If you have any questions about the research now or in the future, you should contact the Principal Investigator, Prof Prager, 917 545 2178 or profprager@aol.com. If you have any further questions concerning your rights as a participant in this study, you may contact Prof Philip Napoli, 719 951 5000 ext 3829, irb@brookly.cuny.edu.
