Advanced Skip Logic
Advanced Skip Logic Design Options The following Skip Logic models are recommended for customers who already have some experience with our Skip Logic tool and/or have read through the previous Skip Logic Tutorials. We explain how to create multiple types of logic paths and suggest using the Menu logic example for more basic survey paths and the Index system for more complicated survey paths. | Model 1 - Skip Logic Menu | Please use these models (1 or 2) for respondents to select multiple options from a list and then be skipped to follow-up pages for each of these options. | Model 2 - Skip Logic Index |
Model 3 - Two End Pages for Survey | Please use this model if you want certain respondents to End the survey on a different page than other respondents. | | | | |
Model 1 - Skip Logic Menu |
| |
| This Skip Logic Pattern sets a simple "Menu" question at the end of each "Details" page. This will allow respondents to skip around between pages to fill out only those options for which they want to submit Details. |
| Due to the complex nature of these Skip Logic Models, we Highly Recommend that you draw some type of map or outline of what your specific Skip Logic pattern will look like. Click for Menu Skip Map |
|
We recommend this pattern for simple Skips only. If you are dealing with a set-up that may require more complexity, we recommend using the Index pattern explained below.
- In this Menu Map, you will see that there is an initial Menu question - Multiple Choice (Only One Answer) - that allows respondents to select the option they would like to expand on. When they select this option the Skip Logic will take them to the corresponding “details” page.
- After filling out the details for a particular option, there is a follow-up “Menu” question at the end of each page. This question will allow respondents to select another menu option to expand upon.
- Once they have completed all of the options that they wish to expand on, the respondent can select “None” and be taken to the end of the survey, or to the next section of the survey.
Model 2 - Skip Logic Index |
| |
| The key to this set-up is that you cannot submit more than one answer to a single question / page. So, the model ensures that no page is over-written. The index is for more complex models that need to be more carefully regulated. |
| The survey can only remember one skip at a time, so each page must be set up so the Skip is going to ONE clear location. |
| For every survey form, you can only have ONE submission per page. Every time a respondent skips back to a page they have already filled out, they will only be over-writing his/her original response, NOT submitting a new response. |
|
Because of these Skip Logic properties, you will need to set up an Index Skip pattern to set up a menu that will allow respondents to both select multiple options AND fill out custom follow-up pages for each option. - This format will present respondents with an index where they can select only ONE option to be directed to a follow-up option details page. They will be presented with the same index that will allow them to select a second option and so on.
| Due to the complex nature of these Skip Logic models, we highly recommend that you draw some type of map or outline of what your specific Skip Logic pattern will look like. This Skip pattern is most clearly displayed in a map which can be viewed by clicking here. Please open this map to follow as you read the following explanation.
|
|
- In the initial page, a menu question is offered. It allows respondents to select only one of the menu options.
- When the respondent has selected the menu option of his/her choice, they are skipped to the specific Option Details page that is directly related to that menu option. This way, the respondent is directed to a page with questions directly related to this answer choice.
- At the end of this option details page, the respondents will be presented with a question “Would you like to select another option?”
If the answer is “No", they are directed to the next section of the survey or to the End Page. If the answer is “Yes”, they will be taken to a Menu page and allowed to select another option.
- In this set up, every option needs an Option Details page and a related Menu page.
- If you have 7 options, then you will need 7 Option Detail pages and 7 Menu pages.
| As shown in this example, respondents can select all of the options without clicking the [Prev] button or by being looped backward in the survey. Respondents visit each page only one time. This is very important because it prevents accidentally over-writing previous responses. In addition, all of the options are easily accessible. |
|
Model 3 - Two End Pages for Single Survey |
| |
| This Skip Logic Pattern outlines how to use Skip Logic to create a second ending page for those respondents you want to exit the survey early or to restrict access to the re-direct or thank you page. |
| Each survey may have only One End Page. This example shows you how to manually create a second End Page. |
| - In this menu map, you will see that respondents who need to end the survey early are redirected to a page that is labeled End Page A. This page instructs the respondents to close the browser window as they are at the end of the survey.
- Because this is not a true end page, the respondents will still be able to click the “Next” button. In order to prevent them from accessing the rest of the survey, this will take them to the next page labeled End Page B. This page is an exact copy of End Page A.
- Again, respondents will have the option of clicking “Next” on End Page B. In order to prevent them from accessing the rest of the survey, you can apply Page Skip Logic to End Page B, so that if the respondent clicks “Next”, they are automatically directed back to End Page A.
- This causes respondents to enter an ‘End Page’ loop, effectively preventing them from accessing the rest of the survey, or any redirect pages.
