Setting Up Skip Logic

Setting up Skip Logic in Your Survey

Skip logic or conditional logic may be used to customize the path respondents follow when taking your survey. To add skip logic to your survey, click the add logic button beside the question or page for which you would like to add the logic.

Things to keep in mind before you set up Skip Logic:

  • Skip Logic activates when the respondent clicks "Next" at the bottom of the page.
  • Skip Logic allows you to skip Pages, not questions within the same page.
  • The order of the survey naturally defaults to the next page in line. Use Skip Logic ONLY if you want to change that order.
  • Almost always, Skip Logic should be applied to the last question on the page.
  • One to One Relationship: The survey recognizes only one skip at a time. This means each page must be set up so the skip is going to One and only one clear location.
  • Surveys may have only one final page. All respondents must end on the same End page, the last page of the survey.
  • We recommend that you always draw a simple map or outline of the various skip paths you want to implement in your survey. This allows for easier set up and trouble-shooting if any problems should arise.

How to start designing skip logic:

Click Design Icon to start1. Open the design editor and select a question or page to which you would like to apply Skip Logic. Question types that allow logic display the Add Logic button button
Note: Multiple Choice questions allow logic (One Answer and Multiple Choice Answers) allow Skip Logic. Matrix style questions do not allow skip logic.

3. Note: All surveys have one final page. Set logic accordingly.

Tip:

Two Types of Skip Logic:

1.

Question Logic:

Please use Question Logic for most skip options. The Question Logic skips respondents to a designated page based on the answer selection for the questions when clicking the navigation button for page.

Note: Question Logic always overrides Page Logic. This principle can be used when you need to redirect respondents to the main survey path, or the end of the survey, after having directed them down a customized path using question Skip Logic.

2.

Page Logic:

Please use Page Logic to skip respondents to a designated page when leaving the current page regardless of selected answers for that page.

Page Skip Logic does NOT require a specific answer. Respondents will redirect to the designated page. If there is also Question Skip Logic on the same page, then the Page Logic will only be activated if the selected answer option is not set to Skip to any other page.

Note: Page logic directs respondents to one location, you cannot set up a second Skip. After you have set up the "Skip to" page, click the save logic button button.

The page logic is next to the page number.

Note:  If you have a Multiple question (Multiple Answer) question type in your survey, the skip will only bring your respondent to ONE Skip page. The survey defaults to take the respondents to the Skip page related to the FIRST answer selected.

2.

How to Add Page Skip Logic to Your Survey

step one

Click the add logic button button next to the page title near the top of your survey design page.

select add logic

twoRead the tips per the pop-up and select the page where you want to skip respondents to from the drop down menu.

select page skip location

save page logic

Moving questions or pages deletes applied logic! We recommend applying Skip as the last step of your survey design because the tool deletes any logic applied to a question or page if the question is moved; additional editing of answer choices can mix up your Skip path.

Add Additional Question Logic

Move to the next page requiring Skip Logic and repeat these steps to add more Skip Logic to your survey.

Note: We recommend filling out Skip in the order of the pages instead of in the order of the Skip. This provides smoother Skip Logic design and should keep you from forgetting needed skip logic.
