How to Cross Tabulate Data
Small Crosstab Image

What is a Crosstab?

The Crosstab produces tables that compare subsets of data by creating a table view of the Crosstab Question compared with the Crosstabbed results.

* To view sub-sets of your data, try the Filter feature.

How to Crosstabulate Data

Begin by clicking the [Crosstab Responses] button to create and apply a Crosstab to your results. (Professional Features)

Familiar with SurveyMonkey Filters?

The Crosstab feature complements the Filtering tool and works like a "blanket" Filter. When applied, the Crosstab displays only the responses entered by that target group, highlighting them through the entire Response Summary page. This allows you to compare how the selected respondents answered the entire survey.

For example, you may have used a question asking respondents if they identify as male or female. You could then create a Crosstab displaying only the male results to see how males responded to the rest of questions in the survey.

What is the difference between Crosstabs and Filters?

Filtering limits your summary view to only those responses that match the criteria in the Filter or subset. Crosstabs highlight the subset by creating a table view of specific question responses compared to the entire results set.

 Filter Example:

Applying a Filter for "male" or "female" shows a combined total of all responses for those that selected "male" or "female." Filtering provides advanced filter combinations including boolean and custom logic.

CrossTabIcon.gif Crosstab Example: Applying a Crosstab for "male" and "female" displays the results of all respondents that chose "male" and those who had chosen "female" in separate columns.
To sum up: Filtering combines different sets of data. Crosstabulation isolates separate sets of data. Just think of it as a Super-Filter.

How to Apply a Crosstab

CrossTab_buttonsmall.gifOpening the results for your survey and click the [Crosstab Responses] button to start Crosstab creation or to view the list of current Crosstabs created for the survey.
Creating and editing Crosstabs:
Click [Crosstab Responses] to open the list of Crosstabs for the survey and select the Crosstab title to open the Editor. If this is your first Crosstab, the Crosstab Editor automatically populates. Within the Crosstab Editor, shown below, you can manage the Crosstab variables.

Create Crosstab

Follow these steps after opening the Crosstab editor to apply it to your results.

1. Select your Crosstab Question from the question menu. These question types work with Crosstabs:

  • Multiple Choice (one answer)
  • Multiple choice (multiple answers)
  • Matrix of Choices (only one answer per row)
  • Matrix of Choices (multiple answers per row)
  • Rating Scale

2. Select up to five question choices to include in Crosstab.

3. Click [Save Crosstab>>] to apply it to your results.

Save Crosstab

Note: The Matrix of Dropdown Choices question type is not available for Crosstabulation.

How to Read the Crosstabulated Summary

The Response Summary opens after you click [Save Crosstab>>], producing a table with the Crosstab applied. The Crosstab header displays the active Crosstab, Total Response Count, and Crosstabbed Total in addition to the Edit and Unapply buttons.

Display Crosstab

Edit Crosstab or Unapply from Results

Make changes to the Crosstab by clicking the [Edit Crosstab] button. This opens the Edit Crosstab menu and allows you to make changes to the applied Crosstab and save.

Click the [Unapply Crosstab] button to return your entire results set without applied Crosstab.

This example summary displays 310 responses out of 1141 total with the Crosstab "Males" applied because 310 respondents selected Male for the gender question and responded to this question.

How to Compare More than One Subset

Compare more than one set of responses by selecting up to five answer choices for Crosstab.

For this example, we applied a Male vs. Female Crosstab report using the gender Crosstab Question with the answer choices of "male" and "female".

Male vs. Female Crosstab Report Example:

This report displays all of the Male and Female responses side by side along with the row and column totals. The question used for Crosstab is in the first row. In the example above, we used the question "Please indicate your gender." The answer choices appear in the second row. The Crosstab highlights these responses throughout the results set.

Male Responses

Female Responses Total Responses
I currently have a loan136 respondents or 43.9% 271 respondents or 50.4%
407 or 48% of the Crosstabbed total (848) selected this row choice.

Answered Question:

(totals)

310 answered this question  538 answered this question  848 Crosstabbed total

In the example, a higher percentage of females than males indicated that they currently have a loan:

  • 50.4% of all the Females who answered the question > 43.9% of all the Males who had answered the question.

However, a higher percentage of males than females indicated that they have never had a loan.

  • 41.9% of all the Males who answered the question > 36.6% of all the Females who had answered the question.

The Response Totals show the number and percentage of respondents that chose the answer at the start of the row. These totals add vertically to show the number of the crosstabbed respondents who had answered that specific question.

  • 407+114+327=848
