The Corporation of the County of Dufferin is commencing a study to develop a County Active Transportation (AT) and Trails Master Plan. This new Plan will support and strengthen the trails/active transportation plans of local municipalities and will outline a comprehensive network of on-road and off-road trails and active transportation corridors to connect Dufferin’s urban and rural communities and promote active transportation. Active transportation in Dufferin County means:

• Active Commuting which involves journeys to and from work;
• Active Workplace Travel which includes trips during working hours such as the delivery of materials or attending meetings;
• Active Destination Oriented Trips which includes trips to and from school, shops, visiting friends and running errands; and
• Active Recreation which involves the use of an active transportation mode for fitness or recreational pursuits, such as hiking and cycling.

The Dufferin County AT and Trails (DCATT) Study will build upon recent studies completed for Orangeville and Shelburne, as well as the Headwaters Communities in Action Trails Working Group and will focus primarily on non-motorized modes (hiking, cycling, walking, cross-country skiing, etc.) on County Roads, Forests and other lands owned by the County. It will help to identify priorities for network implementation projects, suggest how best to partner with local municipalities, determine appropriate levels of funding for operations and maintenance, review the current standards, by-laws, and programs for trails, cycling and walking and introduce a program for public outreach (promotion and education).

This Master Plan study is being conducted consistent with the requirements of Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, which is an approved process under the Environmental Assessment Act. The study area includes the entire County of Dufferin.

Note: Although this is not likely to be a statistically valid survey, the results represent the opinion of a sample of Dufferin County residents regarding trails and active transportation (walking and cycling) and will be used to inform and assist the study team in the development of the County of Dufferin's AT and Trails Master Plan.
